F-Secure Antivirus 2011 Editor's Review

One of the veteran antivirus programs, F-Secure was born (under a different name) in 1988. Along the road antivirus technology has changed, adapted as viruses also became more complex. But the fact that F-Secure is still here proves it is indeed a reliable program.

Version 2011 refreshes previous builds of the software, and brings the same powerful proprietary tools to users:

BlackLight Rootkit Elimination Technology - a smart scanner that can clean your PC from Rootkit infection even if the infection is still active in your computer's memory. This tool can also potentially clean many unknown rootkits, using its advanced detection mechanism.

DeepGuard 2.0 - a technology that works in the cloud, and asks an online database each time an application is executed about possible risks. If the executed application is perceived as a threat, it will be blocked from running.

The engineers at F-Secure worked hard on improving detection and cleaning speed on this latest antivirus version, while making memory footprint smaller and lowering resource usage. This is good news not only for regular scans, but also for the resident protection module.

User interface for this product is clean and minimalist, making everything really easy to use for home users, but at the same time it lacks options that are included in many competing products.

Pluses: Clean interface. Fast scan times. Not resource hungry. Detects and cleans viruses, malware and rootkits acurately.

Drawbacks / flaws: Lacks options. Updating the product takes ages. Forces you to uninstall other antivirus software (not necessarily a bad thing, but I would prefer to have a choice).

In conclusion: F-Secure offers a powerful and speedy antivirus product that unfortunately lacks some options for power users.
